Dave Wilcox (September 29, 1942 – April 19, 2023) played his way from small-town Eastern Oregon to the U of O and eventually to a Hall of Fame career in the NFL.
Wilcox grew up in Vale and graduated in 1960 having led the Vikings to three state title games, winning it all in 1957 and 1958. On his way to growing to 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, Wilcox was the heart of a relentless defense that dominated opponents at what was the Oregon's A-2 level of high school sports.
His college career started as a two-way offensive and defensive lineman at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University). After two years, he transferred to the University of Oregon and played a key role on the defensive for two of Len Casanova's best teams at Oregon. The Ducks went 6-3-1 in ’62, losing only to Texas, Ohio State and Oregon State, the '63 team qualified for the Sun Bowl, defeating SMU. Those teams featured fellow OSHOF members Mel Renfro and Bob Berry.
Wilcox played in the Hula Bowl following his senior season and was voted outstanding lineman. He also played in two other college all-star games before being selected in both the NFL and AFL drafts.
Wilcox signed with the San Francisco 49ers in 1964 and played there for eleven seasons, being named to the Pro Bowl team seven times and the All-NFL team four times at linebacker. He was a defensive leader when the 49ers reached the playoffs three times from 1970-72. He constantly graded out as a top defensive player, retiring after the 1974 season. Known as "The Intimidator" for his ability to shed blocks and neutralize tight ends, he also showed great speed and range, intercepting 14 passes during his career.
Dave retired to Junction City where his two sons, Justin and Josh were raised and both eventually played for the Ducks as well. "The Intimidator" was also known as a kind and gracious man and a great father.
Dave Wilcox is a member of the University of Oregon Athletics Hall of Fame and was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
