One of America's greatest distance runners of all time, Galen Rupp (born May 8, 1986) thrilled fans in Oregon as a prep, collegiate and professional. The native of Portland took part in four Olympic games and won titles
and set records at distances ranging from 1500 meters to the marathon.
Rupp emerged as the next "big thing" for American men's distance while in high school at Central Catholic in Portland. His success drew comparisons to the great Steve Prefontaine, leading to production of "STOP RUPP" t-shirts during the 2003 season. That was reminiscent of the "STOP PRE" meme of the early 1970s. Rupp won OSAA state tiles on the track starting with the 3,000-meter title as a junior and then sweeping the 1500 and 3,000 as a senior in 2004, setting an Oregon State record at 1500. In cross country competition, Rupp led his team to the 2003 state championship, by finishing first himself. He went on to a second-place finish at the Foot Locker national championships.

The record-breaking really took off in 2004. Galen ran a 13:55.32 5,000-meter race, beating college runners at the Stanford Invitational. He broke another Oregon high school record with a 4:01.8 mile then broke the US high school record in the 3000. Racing against international competition before even entering college, Rupp broke the US record at 5,000 meters and then ran the 10,000 in 29:09.56, the fourth-fastest ever by an American high school runner.
After high school, put off his college career for half a year, coached by fellow Oregon Hall of Famer Alberto Salazar. Rupp won the US Junior Cross Country title and qualified for the World meet. He joined the Oregon Ducks for the 2005 outdoor season and continued his rewrite of the record book for Americans at 3,000 and 10,000 meters. By the winter of 2006, Galen was competing in all three seasons of collegiate track and cross country.

Rupp was always pushing forward to the toughest distances and highest levels of competition. He swept the very difficult 5,000-10,000 double at the 2007 Pac-12 meet, then qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he set a US -record of 27:36.99. His final collegiate year, Rupp won an amazing six NCAA championships in Cross Country, indoor 3,000, 5,000 and distance medley relay, then an outdoor sweep of the 5,000 and 10,000. That season earned him the inaugural Bowerman Award as college track's Athlete of the Year.

As a professional, Galen Rupp continued to push the limits in cross country and grueling 10,000 meters while improving personal bests in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter events. In 2012, he made his second Oly
mpic appearance, winning silver in the 10,000, the first American men's medal in the event in 48 years. Ther same season, he broke the American Record for 2 miles indoors and topped Steve Prefontaine's last remaining record in the 5,000 at the Olympic Trials.
The next challenge was the marathon, which Rupp conquered as well, winning the US Trials race. He also qualified for the Rio games in the 10,000, making for an insane double attempt. He finished 5th in the 10K and eight days later won a bronze medal in the marathon. Rupp won more marathons in his career and returned to the Olympics in that event in 2021.
Olympic silver and bronze, Pan American gold and a major marathon win in Chicago, share Galen Rupp's trophy case with mementos of American records and collegiate and high school championships.
