George “Gap” Powell (March 18, 1898 – January 2, 1989) was a man of "firsts" from Portland high school days to lifetime of playing, coaching and recruiting for Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University).

His first "first" was being a member of the initial graduating class of Franklin High School in Portland in 1916.  Powell came to the Corvallis campus where he competed in both football and track and field from 1918-1921.

On the football field, George played fullback and earned All-America honors as a senior, the "first" for any OAC football player. He was named All-Coast two times. Powell won the 1020 Pacific Coast Conference shot put championship

Graduating with a business degree from OAC, Powell stayed one year as an assistant football coach before moving to Southern California.  He would become very successful as an oil and gas distributor. During his business career, he promoted OSU to athletes throughout California and became known as “Mister Oregon State.”

Powell was inducted into the Oregon State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1990.
