Joy Selig (Petersen) (born September 12, 1968) was one of the nation’s top collegiate gymnasts from 1988-91, earning NCAA titles in both the balance beam and floor exercise while competing for Oregon State.  She was the first OSU gymnast to be truly dominant in multiple events.

Selig moved to Corvallis from Placerville, CA and made an immediate impact, finishing second in the nation in floor exercise in 1988.  That was the first of her All-America honors, she would win at least one all four years of her career.

Her best individual event was the balance beam, Joy won back-to-back NCAA titles her sophomore and junior year.  Another individual title came on the floor in her junior year.

Selig's senior season was the year the Beavers hosted the NCAA championship meet at Gill Coliseum.  In front of a packed house and a national television audience, Selig faced all the nation's heavyweights of gymnastics.  She led the Beavers to a 4th place team finish with a third-place finish on the floor and seventh in the all-around.  Joy was named NCAA Woman of the Year and Academic All-America. She also participated in the World University Games.

Her career marks in all-around, balance beam and floor exercise were all school records, and her seven All-America honors were the most in school history at the time.  After graduation, Selig served as an assistant coach at The University of Washington and Denver University.

Joy Selig Petersen was inducted into the Oregon State University Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. She is also a member of the Women's Pac-10 All-Decade team that was selected in 1995. Her statue is outside the Gladys Valley Gymnastics Center on the OSU campus.
