The process of selecting each new class of inductees begins in the late winter.

WHO CAN BE INDUCTED INTO THE OREGON SPORTS HALL OF FAME?

Athletes and Teams: Individuals (and teams) nominated as athletes are judged based on their achievements and recognized excellence. Athletes must have a firm connection to Oregon demonstrated by birthplace and length of residency during their formative years or their collegiate or professional careers.

Athletes become eligible at age 50 or three years following retirement from open competition, whichever comes first.  An athlete may be eligible for induction after competing for 12 years in open competition, regardless of age if in the judgment of the Inductee Selection Committee, the athlete has demonstrated the requirements for induction during that time.

Teams become eligible no sooner than three years after the season for which they are being proposed for induction. High school athletes and teams are no longer eligible for induction.

Coaches: Individuals nominated as coaches are judged based on their coaching record of athletic teams in Oregon. Coaches become eligible at age 50 or upon retirement.

WHO CAN NOMINATE A POTENTIAL MEMBER OF THE HALL?

Anyone who has membership status. All inductees have lifetime membership. All others on yearly membership (see our MEMBERSHIP page to join) can also send in a nomination.

HOW DO MEMBERS SUBMIT A NOMINATION?

All members will receive a form via email or USPS mail to their address on file. If you are a new member or feel like you were missed, contact us directly at info@oregonsportshall.org.

Candidates are proposed by dues-paying members, board members, and past inductees. The Inductee Selection committee selects from among previous candidates and newly-nominated candidates to prepare a ballot. If a candidate has received too few votes in prior elections to justify inclusion, the committee can exclude the candidate from the ballot and place a new candidate on the ballot. Candidates remain on the ballot for 8 years if not inducted (those dropping off can be placed on the Veteran’s list).

THEN WHAT HAPPENS?

In late spring, a ballot with all submitted names is sent to ALL dues-paying members for a first round of voting. Members make ten choices. Those results are calculated, and a final short list goes to the selection committee.

WHAT DOES THE SELECTION COMMITTEE DO?

The Selection Committee is made up of our Board members and others chosen by SportOregon, presenter of the Oregon Sports Awards.

The voting totals are an extremely important component of the selection process; however, the Selection Committee does look at several other factors when determining the induction class.

The selection committee can also suggest another candidate from the “Veterans” category.  That is typically athletes or teams who competed before 1960 and who may have been on the ballot at one time.

The Inductee Selection committee then reviews the members’ preference vote and best candidate from the Veteran’s list, and taking into account the criteria and guidelines, selects a slate of inductees for that year’s induction. This slate is then presented to the full Board of Directors for approval.

WHEN DO WE FIND OUT WHO HAS BEEN SELECTED?

The new inductees will be announced in August by SportOregon and on this site and our social media channels.

WHEN IS THE INDUCTION CEREMONY?

The exact date of the Fall induction ceremony varies from year to year. This has been part of the Oregon Sports Awards ceremony at the Patricia Reser Theatre in Beaverton since 2024. This ticketed event is open to the public.
