1984 & 1985 PORTLAND STATE VOLLEYBALL – TEAMS

Under the guidance of legendary coaches Jeff and Marty Mozzochi, the 1984 and 1985 Portland State Women’s Volleyball teams etched their place in collegiate sports history. These talented women didn’t just win—they dominated. They captured back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships in ‘84 and ‘85, becoming the first Oregon collegiate volleyball program to achieve such success.

The 1984 team made history as the first in women’s athletics at the university to win a National Championship. Led by All-Americans Lynda Johnson, Lisa Couch and Theresa Huitinga, they finished the season with an impressive record of 33-6, including a perfect 16-0 in the Mountain West Conference and a remarkable 21-match winning streak. The Vikings followed this success by becoming back-to-back National Champions in 1985 with a 15-1 record in the Mountain West Conference and a 36-5 overall record.

Together these teams pushed the limits of the game, setting records and raising the standard for volleyball excellence in Oregon and beyond.
