Diego Valeri’s career embodies excellence in Major League Soccer, especially during his time with the Portland Timbers, where he became one of the most influential players in club history. In nine seasons with the Timbers, Valeri helped transform the team into a perennial contender, leading them to the 2015 MLS Cup title and the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament Championship.
Born in Lanús, Argentina, Valeri’s connection to Oregon began in 2013 when he joined the Timbers as a designated player. Known for his creativity, vision, and goal-scoring ability, Valeri became the heart of the Timbers’ attack and a beloved figure in the Portland community. In 2017, he was named MLS MVP after a record-setting season, becoming the first player in league history to record at least 20 goals and 10 assists in a single campaign.
Valeri’s legacy is also defined by his off-field contributions. He and his family embraced Portland as their second home, engaging in numerous charitable initiatives and fostering a strong bond with the city’s fans. He retired from professional soccer in 2023 as the Timbers’ all-time leading scorer and was honored with a ceremonial one-day contract to retire with the club.
