(b. Mar. 11, 1979) You may know him as Freddy, Frederick or just Fred. Last name Jones. He is an Oregon original on the basketball court from Gresham to the University of Oregon to the NBA.
Frederick Jones burst on the scene at Barlow High School beginning in 1995. The super athletic wing could play anywhere on the floor. A gym rat who spent all hours working on his game, Jones became one of the most dynamic Oregon prep players of all time.
The Bruins won 45 straight Mt. Hood Conference games and made three trips to the state tournament. Fred finished his career as the all-time school leader in seven categories and was named State player of the year twice. His senior year he averaged 29 points and 9 rebounds per game.
At the University of Oregon, Freddy Jones emerged in his sophomore year, part of the Ducks breakthrough return to the NCAA tournament. By his senior year he was a candidate for Pac-10 player of the year. The 2002 Ducks made a thrilling march to the Elite 8 and Jones would finish his career with over 1,600 points.
Fred Jones was the 1st round choice of the Indiana Pacers in the 2002 draft. That began a 7-year NBA career that included stops with the Raptors, Clippers, Knicks, and Trail Blazers. He won the 2004 Slam Dunk competition and made 3 playoff trips in his 4 seasons with the Pacers. When his NBA career ended in 2009, Jones was not done with basketball, so he spent two more seasons overseas in Italy and China.
Jones returned to UO to complete his degree while serving as undergraduate assistant coach.
Now a basketball entrepreneur, Fred Jones is eagerly following the budding career of his godson Jalen Atkins, back at Barlow High School and keeps close with his circle of friends from Barlow and the U of O. He is a member of the Oregon Ducks Hall of Fame.
